How about some Australia Day trivia in honour of this hand-painted (and slightly faded) Aussie flag letterbox?
The flag’s original design (with a six-pointed Commonwealth Star) was chosen in 1901 from entries in a worldwide competition held following Federation, and was first flown in Melbourne on 3 September 1901. This little gem is located in Brunswick, about 7km from Melbourne’s GPO.
Did you know the stars on the flag all have names, too?
- Commonwealth Star
- Alpha Crucis
- Beta Crucis
- Gamma Crucis
- Delta Crucis
- Epsilon Crucis
The owners of this letterbox were today one of 3 recipients of our brand-new postcards, which are designed to help collect the stories behind the letterboxes we find. They’re pre-stamped and addressed, so we’re hoping as many as possible make their way back to us as possible!
