While I make my way through posting much of our current collection of letterboxes, Simon and I have been discussing the next major instalment of our project. I’ve never been to Western Australia, and will be heading to Perth in a few weeks to photograph a wedding. I am flying there, however, so the chance to collect a few good boxes will be limited to the drive to and from the wedding west of Perth.
Neither of us have done the journey across the Nullabor Plain – the furthest west I’ve been is Ceduna. We have a rough plan at this point, and it’s looking like this:
Adelaide > Perth > Darwin
29 days and 8,000km of travel
$3,300 for 4WD camper van hire
$250 for travel insurance
$2000 for petrol
$500 for a powered camping site (30% of nights)
$1750 for food
$500 to fly back to Adelaide
Approx $8,300 total, or $1.04 per kilometre which is cheaper than getting a taxi!
As we’re getting married next year, we are considering this trip for our honeymoon, mid-year. I’m also investigating alternative means of funding the journey. If you have a spare camper van or know anyone with a camper van, petrol gift vouchers or other useful things, please get in touch!
